Tutoring of sport internships in Jämsä and Mallorca

If you don’t want to read text above, you can just watch this video about my trip to Mallorca. There are pictures from Palma city, IES Bendinat school, working places Illes Centres de Wellness  and Forestal Park Mallorca with beautifull sights and nature, pictures from working time and free time.  You’ll find video HERE.

My name is Nina Mäki and I am teacher of physical education in Jämsä College. I also teach in further qualification of physical education. I have worked in Jämsä college since 2000, almost right after I graduated from Univerity of Jyväskylä.

About this internationality work, I have been in contact with friendship school IES Bendinat from Mallorca since last spring.  First when their coordinator Nela visited Jämsä. We had a lot of talk and visited different places and working places.  Now one of their student, Xavier, came to Jämsä in the end of March to do his two months final practice including to his studies. I have coached and organized his staying and training in Jämsä. He has been working in different places, for example as teacher and assistant in p.e. in different schools like secondary school, high school and Jämsä college. He has also been working in swimming hall and football club. Xavi has promised to write about his thoughts in this blog later.

In the end of April two of our further qualification in physical education students went to Mallorca to do their learning and training there. In Mallorca I would meet girls and  visit environments and working places for future plans also.

On Monday 15th of May after full working day I started my trip by train first to Helsinki and on Tuesday morning trip continued to Mallorca. I was going to visit some working places in Mallorca and become familiar with staff, their sport studies and environments.

I came to Palma de Mallorca airport at 11:00 am on Tuesday. Adrian pick me from airport. There was some problems in using wifi and getting contact to him. The gate I came was showed wrong in the wall, so he waited me in wrong place, but wefound  finally each other.

We started working right away, by visiting my student’s first working place Illes Wellness Center. It was a huge center with full activity and classes from 6:00 am to 22:00 pm. Very special view from sport classes, nice staff, good and modern equipment of different activities.  All places from swimming pool to functional training places were introduced to me by Manu and Jana Orduna. They also explained their system of student training. Their structure is that student learns all kinds of activities by taking part in classes. In the final week student keeps one or more class by her/his self. I think it’s good plan also for most of our students. The language is a little problem for acting as instructor in classes and this  must be thought well in advance if competence test is planned to do in this environment. There was also talk about induction, which is needed more next time. But this was good experience and very all round working place for future to the module of exercise instruction. They didn’t have so much experience with foreign student, I think we were first, but of cource there has been a lot of spanish students doing their practice.

Second working place was a Forestal Park which is an adventure park in forest. There was very good induction for students to place and safety.  They had also many instructions in english. There are good possibilities to get learning of customer service to groups and to individuals, equipements, safety things and exercise instruction. Here in first picture are Sanna, Katja and the head of Forestal Park Begona.

I also visited accommodation of Sanna and Katja. It was very nice student accommodation and if we compare it to dormitory of Jämsä, there is no big differences. Nice view 🙂

One day I visited school IES Bendinat. There is secondary shcool, high school and vocational school in same building. Totally about 1200 students. For sport studies they have lower and higher studies. Lower studies are for nature sport activities like hiking, mountain biking, canoying and so on. Higher studies prepare you to act as personal trainer, or head of gym, instructor and so on. At school there were very good equipements and facilities. For example this amount of mountain bikes would be nice. Adrian (in picture with me) teaches both in lower studies and higher studies.

Classrooms were quite similar to finnish classrooms. There was also one special class room with  possibilities to do all kind of work with hands, place for functional learning.

In the picture below there was going a class in nature sport studies. They learned here for example how to forecast and take account weather when you are hiking in mountains etc.

Above in picture is teacher of sport studies Carlos Ginovart. He told me that in Spain they have managed to get minimum level of education that you can work in sport field. Meaning it’s not possible to work for example as instructor in gym or as personal trainer, if you don’t have education of minimum level. For example if you act as a personal training without education, you can get penalty of 3000 euros. That kind of decision would be super in Finland also. For peoples safety.

There was also going an international volleyball tournament in the school. They would like to have our students there next year! This year there was participants from Spain, Poland, Italy and Germany aged between 14 and 19. I got good contacts with their teachers, some of the were p.e. teachers. Tournament ended with beach volley.

Here (picture above) is the head of sport studies in IES Bendinat Alfredo Zamora, p.e. teacher from Italy (name is missing) and teacher Anna Lovati from Italy. I think this volleyball tournament could be on the job learning for module acting as professional in sports (and arranging a sport event) and there would even be change to make a competence test with this tournament.

One day I had a lunch with principal of IES Bendinat Margarita Gomila in  such an amazing place (pictures below). There was also teacher Migue Angel Romero, my tutors Adrian Vega and Nela Hidalgo. I think in speech there was similar issues going on. Like how to get teacher to work more together. They were thinking should they break walls from working offices.

Can you imagine more beautifull place to take a lunch ?

I participated also with sport group amazing race in Palma. This student group is doing very similar studies to our further qualification of physical education.

There was a lot of different sport places right in city center. In Palma there is 300 000 residents living and the most time of year tourists multiple this amount.

Picture above: personal trainer working in citypark.

Only three days, but so many different places,  people and views. I think I came back a lot of richer because I got a lot of  experiences. I also have many ideas for competence tests and totally better knowledge in planning on-the-job-training periods in Mallorca in future.

Whole my tour I was taken care  very well by Adrian and Nela from IES Bendinat, but also by superkind hostess for my accommodation  Nuria. Last evening we walked and took dinner with Nuria in Valldemossa, which is nice and beautifull old village just 18 kilometers from Palma. Here in picture is a street of Valldemossa.

Adíos Mallorca !!!

Good vibes

Good morning!

Today is (finally) our last day in Malta. Our flight leaves at 17:20 from Malta to Frankfurt and we’ll be in Finland after midnight. I’m missing my pets, friends and family so much. After all, six weeks have gone by very quickly. We’ve had a lot of fun!

This week we visited Manoel Island in Gzira. It’s located right next to Sliema. Manoel Island’s population is zero if you don’t count in the ducks, hens, geese, guinea pigs, rabbits and cats living in the Duck Village. Duck Village is maintained by one man who has built it from trash and things he has found in the streets.  Funny to see cats and birds getting along so fine!

On Manoel Island there is Fort Manoel but it’s not open to public. It’s an old war fort and it was built in the 18th century. It has been restored after WWII. I was a bit disappointed that we couldn’t go around the fortress but we walked around the island itself. Needless to say, it was stunning! Nuff says, the fort is haunted by the Black Knight but we didn’t catch a glimpse of him.

Tuesday was our last work day at the head office in Qormi. We made wallets for the customers and organized them by the meeting dates.

Before every tour the customers have a meeting in the head office where the tour leader tells them about the trip and gives them the plane tickets. It’s usually kept one or two weeks before the departure.

After we had done all our work, we bought 11 doughnuts for our co-workers, gave them Karl Fazer’s chocolate and fed them salmiakki. Surprisingly, no one even grinned when tasting it! It was kind of sad to leave all our workmates there, but I’m sure we’ll be in touch in the future.

On Wednesday & Thursday we went to the Mosta Branch. We invoiced customers and made bookings with the Group Travel System. It was a lot of fun to work with Natasha, Maddie and Andrew! After work we had a closing meeting with Paragon.

Our last three days we’ve spent well in the beach. I’m going to miss the sea so much! I love swimming in it and watching the waves hit the coast when it’s windy.

This has been as great adventure for the both of us. We’ve learned a lot about Maltese culture and working as a part of a big family business. I recommend this for anyone who has ever thought about working abroad. You should follow your dreams and go already!

Best wishes,

Remu

Something new something old

Evening everyone!

So today our last week started and I am pretty exited to come back home but same time it’s kind of sad because I am gonna miss this place and people here. But lets get to the point.  Since last post at work we have been filling in the customer wallets and counting all ready past tours feedback forms. Last week at Wednesday we also got to know the Valletta’s branch and we  were taught how to make the reservations and stuff like that. It was really nice  because the people there were extra friendly and the customer were so laid-back. We were there also today but we didn’t work whit customers this time. So we have learned again something new.

Working hard in Valletta branch 😀

At Tuesday after work we went to Lascaris War Rooms and Saluting Battery. It is a war museum and it consist of an underground complex of tunnels and chambers that housed the War Headquarters from where the defense of Malta was conducted during the Second World War. This secret complex contained operations rooms for each of the fighting services from where not only the air defense of Malta was coordinated,  but also some of the greatest battlesfought in the Mediterranean during the war. It was really interesting because we don’t know much about Malta’s history. We also witnessed a cannon shot in Saluting Battery it was pretty impressive.

At weekend we toke really easy. At Saturday we went to the beach in Sliema but we weren’t there so long because we were to near at coast and one bigger wave wet our towels. 😀 After that accident we just hanged around in Sliema. In the evening we went to see our boss’ band gig. It was awesome and you can check their Facebook profile at this link Decline The Fall !

But I think there was everything worth of telling from our last week

till next one!

Despite the sickness, I’m finally here !

Hello! It’s Minna writing here. I arrived today to Chichester. I am twenty years old horticultural student from Jämsä college.

My flight left from Finland at 8.45 local time.  I was arriving to Gatwick airport at ten o’clock. Traveling by bus and plane was easy because I slept all the time.

I was SUUPER scared to do all this alone, but everything went very well. I found easily my train to Chichester and the college was so near the train station. Last week I was in Turkey and I became very sick there. (and I’m STILL sick. ugh.) I have lost my voice and when I try to speak it sounds more like fifty years old man who has been drinking whiskey all his life….

Anyway ! I was too excited to stay at the campus so I went to the city … and OH MY IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL. I think I’m already in love this place.

I hope I will have some fun here!  Tomorrow I’ll start working at west dean gardens!

Love, Minna

Our first day in Spain!!

So…our buss left from Jyväskylä to Helsinki at 2:00 am. We were VERY tired, but at the same time very excited 😛

When we arrived at the airport I was a little bit nervous, because it was going to be my first time flying :O Aino was little bit nervous too, but fortunately she has flyed before, so we were’nt so lost at the airport 😛

But when our plane was in the air, I relaxed. It was SO cool and beautiful <3 We loved every second.

4 hours later we arrived at Palma’s airport. We already love this city. It’s so warm and beautiful in here <3 (When at the same time in Finland is snowing hahahah) People are so nice and friendly 🙂 I think we will stay in here forever 😛

But now we are going to sleep 🙂 Good night everyone <3 It was a very nice day today!

-Annica-

Where have all the days gone?

Four weeks have gone by so fast! After today, we have only 13 days left in Malta. A week ago on Sunday we went to Mdina to see ”The Medieval Mdina Festival”. There were all kinds of stuff from the Middle Ages and we even got to see old-school torture equipment. Some people were dressed to fit the festival and we witnessed duels, archery battles and so much more.

On Monday was a public holiday (May Day) so we didn’t have work. Instead we decided to travel to Blue Lagoon in Comino. We took a ferry from Ic-Cirkewwa to Blue Lagoon and after 10 minutes we arrived to our destination. It was mesmerizing to see such landscapes I’ve only seen in photos and advertisements. The water was so clean and turquoise! We stayed the whole day there exploring the island and adoring the views.

Yesterday we explored Marsaskala, which is a sea-side village in the South Eastern Region of Malta with a population of 12 00 people. Even though it’s right by the sea, it was so hot I felt like I was melting. We saw some pretty rad street art and a few abandoned houses. We also discovered a beautiful and peaceful beach there.

When we walked along the Promenade, we saw salt pans on the shore. Salt pans have been used at least for 350 years in Malta. Basically, the sea water fills the crevices in the coast line. It is left settled for eight days and then it is moved to smaller salt pans, further from the sea and in a warmer temperature. The salt starts to dry and form salt crystals. After it has dried enough, it is collected, processed, packed by hand and distributed to markets, food shops and souvenir stores.

Kind of amazing, huh?

Gollum in Marsaskala

At work we have been filling in envelopes that will be given to the customers at the start of their tours. The envelopes include a feedback poll, airport policies, luggage tag and such things. It sounds easy but it’s very precise, we have to write every customers name separately on the envelope and on the feedback poll we write the tour names and dates.

Today our co-worker Isabelle brought us pieces of chocolate cake in the middle of the day! It was a cheerful surprise. On Wednesday we will go see Valletta’s branch of Britannia Tours and meet other people that work for Britannia Tours.

This is a totally normal sight on our work desks at work. So much paper work!

Have a nice day! Or as the Maltese say, Il-gurnata t-tajba!

Best wishes,

Remu

General Issues

Hi, have a nice time reading this. I am not a name, I am a number 17161. At least in my working place´s database. Well, I was given a name Tero, which has been in use since that. And who knows how old my soul is. This body I use in this existence is almost 29 years old. But what might really matter is that I am practicing  greenhouse work and paving now in Denmark. My accommodation is in a gardening school called jordbrugetsskole (or simply Green Academy) in Beder. The Danish students living here are nice people, which prevents me from sleeping enough. In greenhouse I will work for 3 weeks and then I will change to a paving company for 3 weeks. I arrived here in 17.4.2017, on a day when no markets was open. But I was lucky to get coffee and bread from a local bakery.

The very next day I started to work for company called Graff Kristensen, which is located in Sabro, 10km to northwest from Aarhus. Their main product is hibiscus, but they grow also poinsettia, and I have seen some cacti growing there too. It is my first experience working in a greenhouse so I really don´t know if there is something which would be called special in their procedures. But what seems to be common practice in this field of business is that majority of the workers come from eastern Europe. And that is a thing which makes the work even more enjoyable for me. Even though it is a bad thing that global economy is in imbalance, which causes the need for people to travel away from their homes. These people have welcomed me well and they have taught me their languages. So I have learned more Polish and Ukrainian than Danish, and anyone who has ever tried to speak Danish, understands why.

So far this experience has been beyond all the praising words. In only one week I have had so many new experiences that it is already hard to remember those all. For example in last Sunday my friend Martin made me go into the sea in hangover, right after we had woken up. And I can tell it was cold because of the insane wind I never have to feel in Finland. It was more of a challenge than going into avanto last winter. I don´t know if I have the guts to party with him anymore if that is the way we shall always cure our hangovers.

Pictures might be provided later. Until then just imagine a flat land in spring.

Could someone please explain me this existence?

Second week in Malta

Evening everyone!

It’s Susanna writing again. Since Remus last post much hasn’t happened. We have start get used to our work place and working is easier everyday. Also we have been get to now our workmates little bit better and they had bring us some traditional Maltese pastry and they have been interested in Finland and our language. We have been doing now same kind of office work which Remu told you in last post.

Traditional Maltese cake which one our workmate brought to office. it was pretty good!
Gate to Mdina

Enough from work. Last weekend we explored this kind of weird culture and country more and last Friday after work we found our way to Mdina. Mdina is Malta’s  old capital city and it’s history has traces back more than 4000 years. It still has it’s walls and moat and when you walk from the city gate it’s like you have been time traveled straight to the Middle Ages. Its not allowed to drive a car there which make it really calm place. The quietness, churches, chapels and architecture which has been remain unbelievable well guarantees amazing experience.

This is The Blue Grotto

We spent Saturday in Blue Grotto and it’s marvelous sea caves which are popular tourist attractions. Why? you should just take a boat and see it yourself. It locates at the coast at the southern part of Malta and the bare, rocky island and sea shows there whole new side of them. The Blue Grotto Malta started to get its name in the early 1950’s, when the British army personnel located in Malta at the time, used to ask the local fisherman to take them for a boat trip to the Blue Grotto sea caves.

One Blue Grotto sea cave
Water was so clear in the sea caves!

At Blue Grotto there was a birdwatcher (Sharp sight Falconry) and people had a chance to hold the bird on their hand

At Sunday we decided to relax and go to the beach. We did some research and after hard choice we went to Golden Bay which is one of the Malta’s best beach.  It was a bit disappointment because that day was pretty windy and in the shore there was lot of dead reed but because the wind we didn’t even want to go swim. But it was still nice to see a new part of this island.

So I think there was all for this time so good night and sleep thigh!
