Vierailimme YK:n tutkimusinstituutio UNRISD:illa, jonka tarkoitus on tutkia erilaisia poliittisia päätöksiä kestävän sosiaalipolitiikan näkökulmasta. TET-päivän aikana saimme upean mahdollisuuden tutustua organisaation toimintaan ja antaa oman työpanoksemme kirjoittamalla nettiartikkelin Maailma on mun -projektista UNRISD:in nettisivuille.

Kuva: Kahtena ensimmäisenä aamuna törmäsimme myös arjen sosiaalipolitiikkaan – Sveitsissä oli julkisten alojen lakko liikoja säästöjä vastaan.

Oli mahtavaa huomata, kuinka ihmiset eri kulttuureista tekivät työtä yhdessä edistääkseen hyvinvointia maailmassa. Oli tosi mielenkiintoista huomata kuinka eri kielitaustat näkyivät toimiston arjessa. Esimerkiksi oppaanamme toiminut italialais-ranskalainen David Vergari oli heti alusta saakka easy-going ja toivotti meidät lämpimästi tervetulleeksi.

Työyhteisö vaikutti odotustemme vastaisesti todella rennolta ja kannustavalta. Oli mukavaa, kun ensitapaamisella pystyimme nauramaan yhdessä yhteiskunnallisen keskustelun lomassa.

TET-päivän aikana huomasimme, että kaikilla toimiston työntekijöillä oli ainakin kolme kieltä, joita he käyttivät jokapäiväisessä työssään. Ihmiset tulivat myös todella erillaisilta yliopistokoulutuksen aloilta, mikä avasi silmämme akateemisen koulutuksen työmahdollisuuksista. Ymmärsimme myös organisaation merkityksen eteenkin Euroopan mittakaavassa, mutta myös maailman ongelmien ratkaisussa.

Erityisen siistiä oli, kun David vei meidät Palais des Nationsin kattoterassille, joka on tarkoitettu vain VIP-ihmiselle. Kulissien takana kierros paljasti mm. sen, että alueen puutarhassa on pidettävä riikinkukkoja alueen edesmenneen lahjoittajan pyynnön kunnioittamiseksi.

An Eye- opening experience

We were job shadowing the work of UNRISD, The United Nations research institution for social development. During the course of the day we got familiar with the work of the organization and we were given an opportunity to write an article about our “World-is-yours”-project and publish it in UNRISD webpages. It was a great honour.

Our own experiences about the work and the atmosphere in the UNRISD were really good. It was nice to notice how colleagues from different backgrounds worked together and we were able to detect even some cultural differences during the day (at least compared to Finnish culture). For example our guide David Vergari was really welcoming and easy-going right from the beginning. That wasn’t something we were expecting because the working-life in Finland is more rigid and formal.

The working environment seemed really encouraging and relaxed- that’s something every working community should strive to. It was really nice that during our first meeting we could talk freely and laugh amongst the interesting discussions.

During our day at UNRISD we noticed that every employee had at least two languages which they used in their daily work. Moreover, people came from really diverse university backgrounds which opened our eyes about the future working possibilities after university studies. We also realized the importance of international co-operation and the work of UNRISD in Europe. The impacts of their work can in fact be spread all over the world!

One of the most interesting parts of the day was the behind the scenes tour that David took us. He told for example that in the garden of the Palais des Nations were always peacocks to honor the wish of the man who gave the area to United Nations.
