Small group from Jyväskylä Educational Consortium / Jämsä Colege visited in Hungary at Budapest region 7-11.11.2015. Aim of the visit was develop Cooperation between Finnish and Hungarian schools. Finnish participants were Aino Malin, Petteri Järvinen, Ari Salmela and Kari Kytömäki.

Monday 9.11.2015 we visited in Varga Márton Kertészeti és Földmérési Szakképző Iskola vocational School. We had a great pleasure to see teachers and students at duty on their College. Study line of the food processing industry was quite interesting! Students made traditional sausages, many different types of jams & juices, they also have own brewery and distillery.

After lunch at afternoon we visited at local Vocational school of Agriculture. Harvest season was over, but some students were training with horses (Lippizan!!!) and taking care of cattle.

Tuesday was the day for horticulture, land surveying and forestry. Early on the morning we visited at Varga Márton Kertészeti és Földmérési Szakképző Iskola schools horticulture and land surveying department. We had a nice tour in small Arboretum at schools back yard. After Arboretum we cheked greenhouses. The highlight of the tour was nice Japanese garden.

Afternoon it was time to visit at local Vocational School of Forestry. Forestry School is located at Piliscsaba town. Piliscsaba is part of Budapest metropolitan area, distance from Forestry School to Budapest is about 35km. Study lines in Piliscsaba Forestry School are manually logging (with chain saw), game Management and Multiple use of forests.

It has been a while when we last time wrote a blog.
Time has went really fast and now is time to go home.
Three weeks ago we were in local vocational school with Jussi. Students made a presentation about Ibiza and cooked local foods for us. One day later we went to the old town (Dalt Vila), where students gave us a tour. They told about history and important places.
We did a skills demonstration this week that had different kind of installations and tasks. Skills demonstration went well and both of us get it done.
In the last day our work mates offered foods and drinks and gave us few gifts.
I was in Spain and more specifically in Ibiza which is part of Balearic Islands. Two electrical engineering students to do their on-the-job learning in Ibiza Town. Catalan is most spoken language in Balearic Island, so on many places can see name Eivissa, what is Ibiza in Catalan.
Students start their on-the-job period on end of September and they will come back after 8 week on mid-November. Student’s wok in local electrical company Medori Electricicad and they just do normal electrical installations like in Finland.
Here is Mikko and he just doing installations on local house. They will change main connection from 3-phase to 1-phase system. In Ibiza it is usual that houses use 1-phase system, because they don’t have a devices what need 3-phase system (like sauna heaters).
Here is Aleksi and he was tearing down old installation in local adult school. After that they will install new electrical appliances there.
Here is picture from local school and its electrical engineering workshop. Students in workshop made direct on like starter for motor. Miniature circuit breakers (MCB), contractors, overload units seems to be same kind what we use. The local students was friendly and only few of them spoken English.
Here we are on Dalt Vila (upper town) what is old town in Ibiza town. Tourism students give as a guided tour in Dalt Vila. The tourist season in Ibiza was over, so there was pretty quiet. But weather was nice, sun shine and temperature was in the daytime 20-22°C and in the evenings about 15°C.
I flew from Tampere to London Stansted. My flight was 5,5 hours late. There was some problems on the airplane.
Due to the delay of the flight my connections went wrong. I had ordered and paid a bus ticket to Oxford and one night in a B&B place in Oxford. I was able to change my ticket but I couldn’t go to the original hostel to sleep, because it was too late and the place had closed. I decided to leave for London at night. A name of the place was B&B Jubilee. It is situated near Wictoria Coach Station. I went in to Jubilee little bit after midnight. Now they only had one double room left. I took it and slept “widely”.
Sunday 19th of April
After breakfast I took a bus to Oxford. A bus company was National Express. The coach was new and fine. There was a free Wifi in the coach!
I was in Oxford about at 11 o’clock a.m. I walked around Oxford for 6 hours. I went to snack bars and looked at different sights. I visited one sightseeing tower and Bodleian Library. The library has been open since the Middle Ages. I attended a guided tour in the library too. I could see from the other participants’ faces that it was a very interesting tour. But I didn’t understand anything. 🙂
In the evening I took a train to Charbury. My host family (Claudia and Mel) picked me up from the railway station. Our destination was a little village, Finstock.
I lived at the place of my host family, Mel and Claudia. They were a retired couple. Mel was 70 years and he was my teacher.
From Monday 20th to Friday 24th of April
Every day I had a same kind of timetable:
6:00 am: wake up, study and a morning walk
8:30 am: breakfast
9:00 am: English lessons 3,5 hours, one break
1:00 pm: lunch
2:00 pm English lessons 1,5 hours
4:00 pm: freetime and study
8:00 pm: supper
We ate and spent a lot of freetime together. We walked around village and we visited in few villages and towns near their place. I met their neighbours and I got to practise my conversation skills.
Saturday 25th of April
I woke up 3 o’clock and travelled by coach to Stansted Airport via London. Now my trip went without problems. I arrived to Finland at 4:00 pm. I was tired but happy. Overall, the trip went very well. I really liked it. I got more motivation for my English studies. And now I know, that I cope alone abroad – if I have money!

Matkaraportti Englanti 28.2.-13.3. 2015
Matkani alkoi lauantaina 28.2. Tampereen lentoasemalta. Lentoa odotellessa tapasin entisen työkaverin Sarin, jonka kanssa vaihdettiin kuulumisia, muisteltiin vanhoja aikoja sekä juoruiltiin työkavereista. Sarille kerroin matkani tavoitteista ja murehdin sitä, että on pitänyt odottaa näin kauan ennen kuin pääsen tutustumaan englantilaiseen kulttuuriin ja kieleen. Hän totesi, että on ihan sama minkä ikäisenä asiaan ryhtyy. Tästä kommentista voi olla monta mieltä, mutta matka alkaa joka tapauksessa kohti Englantia.
Ensimmäisen yö vietin Stanstedin lentoaseman likellä olevassa hotellissa ja seuraavana aamuna matka jatkui junalla kohti Harrogatea.
Kahden viikon majoituksen olin varannut Acorn Lodge -hotellista. Pieni hotelli, jossa oli seitsemän huonetta likellä keskustaa. Omistajapariskunta oli ystävällinen ja erittäin huolehtiva. http://www.acornlodgeharrogate.co.uk/ Philip tarjoili joka aamu englantilaisen aamiaisen jonka voimin selvisi illalliseen asti. Hiukan tai aika paljon tuli tuotua aamiais- makkaroita, munia, pekonia ja papuja vyötäröllä kotimaahankin. Että kiitokset siitä Philipille ja Allisonille!

Maanantaiaamu oli ankea ja sateinen, ”55-vuotias koulupoika” astelee Royal Paradea kohti Harrogate Language Academya pieni jännitys hartioissa. Paikan olin valinnut erään tutun suosituksesta. Academic Manager Lisa Campbell oli minua vastassa ja hän haastatteli, kyseli kuulumiset. Tämän jälkeen seurasi noin sadan kysymyksen testi, jonka tulos ohjasi ”sopivan” tasoiseen ryhmään.

Intensiivikursseilla on 30 oppituntia viikossa. Aamutunnit (09.30 -13.00) maanantaista perjantaihin ja iltapäivällä (14.00-16.30).
Ryhmät
Vähän jäykkää ja jännää ensimmäiset päivät olivat. Opiskelijoita oli useista maista. Eräskin ranskalainen oli opiskellut ko. opistossa jo kolme vuotta. Samaan aikaan minun kanssani aloitti nuorimies nimeltä Ali. Hän oli kotoisin Qatarista. Ali viihtyi kurssilla vain viikon. Suurin osa opiskelijoista asui ”isäntäperheissä”, joissa he osallistuivat perheen arkeen.
Kurssipäivät oli hyvin samanlaisia. Oppikirja ohjasi työskentelyä. Kolme opettajaa hoiti opetuksen, ja joka päivä tuli kotitehtäviä, jotka tarkistettiin seuraavana päivänä. Rankkaa ja stressaavaa, mitä sitten hoidin syömällä hyvin ja tutustumalla englantilaiseen kulttuuriin.
Keskiviikkoiltana Leedsissä oli jalkapallo-ottelu, jota olin ajatellut mennä katsomaan. Iltapäivän alussa kysyin vapaaksi päiväni viimeistä tuntia opettajalta. Hän komensi minut keskustelemaan asiasta opiston johtajan kanssa. Lupa heltisi – mutta ei ihan helpolla.
Leedsin Stadium, Elland Road avattiin vuonna 1897, mutta ensimmäisinä vuosina sitä käytettiin ainoastaan rugby-otteluissa.
Peli alkoi puoli seitsemältä ja paikalle oli tullut arviolta 30 tuhatta jalkapallon ystävää kannustamaan omaa joukkuettaan. En ole oikein ollut jalkapallon seuraaja, mutta kun ottelun pääsi katsomaan paikan päälle, niin aloin arvostaa suuresti pelaajien osaamista ja varsinkin nopeutta. Taitavat juosta 100 m kymmenen sekunnin pintaan joka pelaaja.
Lauantain vietin läheisessä kaupungissa. Aamujunalla Yorkin tuomiokirkkoa etsimään. Se on goottilaista arkkitehtuuria edustava katedraali. Keskilaivan rakentaminen aloitettiin 1280-luvulla, ja katedraali vihittiin käyttöön 1472.
Maanantaina taas koulun penkille. Aamulla heräsin kuudelta omantunnon kolkutukseen, kotitehtävät tekemättä ja tentti alkaa 9.30. Kolme tuntia tehtäviä ja valmistumista kurssipäivään 🙂 . Ei paljon hymyilyttänyt.

Matkan tavoitteena oli kielitaidon lisääminen ja erilaiseen kulttuuriin tutustumista. Yhteenvetona voisi todeta, että Englanti on hieno maa ja ihmiset, joita kohtasin, olivat ystävällisiä. Toinen tavoite vaatii vielä harjaantumista ja aikaa.

All things must come to an end, and so must our journey. We are taking the first ever direct Finnair flight from Dublin to Helsinki. In celebration of that, there are balloons decorating the gate and refreshments with special cupcakes are served to the passengers.
Hopefully we will be reunited with our luggage once we get back home. See you soon!
We took a bus to see Jarna and her training place Hotel Minella. The distance between Dublin and Clonmel is not that long nyt it took three and a half hours to get there. On the road we saw some beautiful scenery in the spring sun.
On the morning we had a meeting with the hotel manager who gave Jarna top evaluations. She also gave Jarna some extra time off so she joined us back to Dublin.
Three of our teachers are seeking new contacts for EU-projects. We had a good and fruitful meeting with Warnborough College representatives this morning. More news to come, stay tuned.
